It's almost the spooky season. Get ready to put up the cutest felt garland for your October decoration. This tutorial is perfect for beginners who can spend 15 minutes making a Halloween garland or any garland at home.
Grab 30 felt balls in the color of your choice. We used 2.5 cm for the solid and polka dot balls, 4 cm Skeleton felt shape and 9 cm SPOOKY felt letters.
Lay out your felt shapes in the desired order and pattern.
This step allows you to visualize the garland'sfinal look and make any adjustments if necessary.
Step 3: Attach the Shapes to the String
Thread the needle with your string.
Make sure the string is long enough for the entire garland.
Pierce the needle through the felt balls/shapes.Leaving a tiny bit of space is encouraged.
Step 4: Hang Your Felt Garland
Make a hang loop knot on both ends of the garland.
Hang it across your fireplace mantle, along astaircase, or as a backdrop for a special celebration.
Tips and Tricks:
There's no right or wrong size felt ball or shape. They areall great but size 2.5 cm is the most popular for the felt balls. Add extraembellishments like sequins, buttons, or beads for extra flair.
If you want a longer garland, you can add more felt ballsand shapes or space your existing balls further apart.
Choose a string or ribbon that complements your felt colors.
Make sure it's long enough to accommodate your desiredgarland length. We use DMC Perle Cotton Size #8 for a lot of the garlands wemake, but you can use any string or twine. We recommend that you test thestring to ensure it is strong. Sewing thread is typically too weak and willbreak.
Keep in mind that the thicker the thread, the larger theneedle hole needs to be.
The eye of the needle needs to be larger than your threads. Also, because we are using bigger letters for this piece, you will need alonger needle. We used a 6 inch needle for this project.
The larger the needle, the more resistance you will feelwhen you push the needle through the felt ball. Use a thimble to push theneedle through. The skinnier the needle, the easier it is to push the needlethrough the ball, and the faster you can make your garland.
